Albemarle High School Crew started as a club team in the spring of 2012 with two team members; Matt Korbon and Nicole Ward. During that first spring, only Matt competed at the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association (VASRA) regattas in the single shell. In the spring of 2013, the team grew to six rowers; Gabe Giacalone, Matt Dean, Gaelen Rickard, Matt Korbon, Hannah MacKnight and Kat Seitz. The boys’ quad made up of all four boys were VA state champions. During the 2012 and 2013 seasons, AHS practiced out of the Beaver Creek Boathouse in Crozet alongside Western Albemarle's Crew team. In the spring of 2014, the team moved their operations to the Virginia Rowing Association's boathouse under the auspice of Rivanna Rowing Club. In 2014, the boys’ quad of Gabe, Matt Dean, Gaelen, and novice rower Mason Landon-Smith, was a repeat VA state champion and the girls’ junior double of Lydia Eisenberg and Claiborne Earles placed third at the Scholastic National Regatta held in Princeton, NJ. Other team members in 2014 included Kat, Hannah, Morgan Campbell, David Braatz, Gus Truslow, and WAHS rower Ashley Gale. In the spring of 2015, the team grew to 20 members (including 15 novice rowers) and four coaches. The girls’ double of Lydia Eisenberg and Claiborne Earles were VA State Champions, as well as third at the prestigious Stotesbury regatta and fifth at the Scholastic National Regatta. Single sculler, David Braatz, was second at the VA state regatta and a top twelve finisher at Scholastic Nationals. Liam Rickard and Jake Pierce, in the Lightweight Boys 2x, were also second at the VA state regatta. 2016 was a banner season for the AHS Crew Team. We won four state championships: Boys Double (David Braatz & Hayden Davis), Boys Lightweight Double (Liam (aka “Hugh”) Rickard & Jake Pierce), Boys Quad (Graham Haynie, Clark Benham, John Wray, & Will Banner), and Girls Lightweight Double (Rachel Lloyd & Erin O’Hara). The team also made it to the finals in the five events we entered at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta. Most recently, in the spring of 2017, with a team of 20 total rowers, we had two VA State Champion boats; Girls’ Senior Double (Emmy Wuensch & Eliza MacKnight) and Boys’ Lightweight Double (Hugh & Jake). Hugh and Jake were second place finishers at the Stotesbury regatta and Emmy and Eliza were second place finishers at the Scholastic National regatta. This fall, rowing as Rivanna Rowing Club, we had two boats enter the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. Emmy, rowing the youth single, finished 6th out of 25 and Jake and Hugh, rowing in the youth double, finished 11th out of 48. Albemarle currently has three of its’ alumni rowing in college.
