Cathy Coffman started the program in 2012 and has been the head coach since the inception of the team. Coach Coffman has been rowing for 40 years and her coaching experience spans 30 plus years with juniors, as well as masters and college rowers. Coffman rowed at Washington-Lee High School, The University of Virginia, Potomac Boat Club, Occoquan Boat Club, and Rivanna Rowing Club. She was the runner up at the 2014 CRASH-B’s in the Senior Veteran Lightweight event. As a rower, she has medaled at Stotesbury, Dad Vails, Club and Master's Nationals, as well as the Head of the Charles (first place in the Grand Master’s Double in 2017). As a coach, her crews have won New England and Scholastic Nationals, placed at Stotesbury, and several of her rowers have gone on to be on the junior national team and/or row in college. She teaches AP Calculus at AHS and is the Girls’ Cross Country Coach.
Tom Von Hemert
Tom Von Hemert joined the coaching staff in the spring of 2015. Tom Von Hemert started rowing at T.C. Williams High School as an 8th grader and was the Varsity Men’s Crew Captain and Outstanding Rower of the Year in his senior year. Tom rowed four years at Boston University and was the captain of the men’s crew program. He has rowed and coached at numerous Rowing Clubs over the last 30 years: Potomac BC, Occoquan BC, University of Virginia Crew, London RC, Rivanna RC, Virginia BC, and Beaver Creek BC. He currently works for the Charlottesville City Police Department.
Scot's Passion for rowing and coaching began almost 16 years ago when he learned how to row at the Rivanna Rowing Club. While rowing he served multiple capacities on the RRC's board including Vice President and Marketing Director. Scott joined the AHS coaching staff in 2014. His love for teaching crew evolved while riding the launch alongside of many experienced coaches during club programs including Learn to Row, Juniors and Masters. Scott's "day jobs" include catering sales at UVa and co-founder of Crew-Cuts, a yard work team employing AHS rowers.
Abbie Deal has been the assistant coach since the fall of 2013. Abbie Deal has been coaching crew since graduating from Williams College in 2012. As a rower at Williams, she was a four-time DIII NCAA champion. Abbie's other rowing accomplishments include two gold medals and one course record in the collegiate 8 at the Head of the Charles. She also excelled in the water as a varsity swimmer at Williams, and began her coaching career at Fairview Swim Club where she helped coach the team to six of their twenty-eight consecutive JSL championships. She is a special education teacher at AHS and competes in the sport of Strong(wo)man in her free time.
Jack Cann joined the staff during the 2016 season. Coach Jack Cann began rowing in 1993 for the London Rowing Club and earned elite status and the right to wear its blazer the following year. He was granted life membership in the club in 1997. He has rowed regularly in the Head of the River (London), the Volga Longa (Venice), London-Twickenham Challenge Cup (Henley) and numerous other head and sprint races. Coach Jack has been coached by four Olympic coaches, three at London and one at Alexandria Rowing Club, now Alexandria Community Rowing. He was invited to join Leander Club in 2004 (this is a BIG deal – research “Leander Club”). In the fall of 2014, he served as an assistant coach with the men’s program at the University of Virginia.
